Haiti - FLASH : PM Henry is committed to holding elections in Haiti before August 31, 2025

Wednesday February 28, 2024, at the end of the 46th ordinary meeting of Caricom, the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Phillip Davis at a press conference, recalled that Prime Minister Ariel Henry during his closing speech at the summit, s is committed to holding elections before August 31, 2025.

"When you look at the number of deaths in January, you see that there were more deaths in Haiti than during the same month of war between Ukraine and Russia. This tells us the depth of suffering among the Haitian population," lamented Davis.

For this reason, Davis informed that an assessment team led by Caricom and the United Nations with support from Canada, the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS) will meet before March 31, 2024 to support the planning and efforts of relevant institutions to be established in Haiti.

Thursday, February 29, António Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, upon his arrival in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to participate in the VIII summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) called for "the implementation", without delay, of the recent commitment made by the Government of Haiti to hold elections before August 31, 2025 "There has been progress in the scheduling of elections. The problem that we must be sure to resolve is their implementation and that they are not postponed" he declared during a press conference with the Prime Minister of Saint- Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph. Gonsalves.

"We absolutely must move quickly towards the implementation of what has been decided because, let's be clear, you can put police forces in Haiti but, if there is no political solution, the problem will not be resolved" stressed António Guterres.

Gonsalves was optimistic and declared that the Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, had moved towards "a compromise position" estimating "In my opinion, there is a lot of progress and political commitment on the horizon."
