Haiti - «Teach Primary» : A new tool for observing the work of teachers in classrooms

Around fifty senior executives from the central office of the Ministry of National Education, including General Inspectors, Pole Coordinators, Technical Directors, Department Heads are in training, in Pétion-ville (February 26 and 27, 2024), in the aim to appropriate "Teach Primary", a new tool for observing the work of teachers in classrooms.

It was Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education, who opened this training seminar organized with the financial support of the World Bank (WB).

During these two days, these senior executives of the education system are called upon to get to know "Teach Primary", a tool likely to facilitate objective observation of what is actually done in classrooms with regard to teaching/learning. An instrument already tested by the World Bank in more than 40 countries, with generally satisfactory results.

During his intervention, Minister Manigat underlined "the school has the obligation to respond to the needs of society which requires a different quality of school in the 21st century. Which must inevitably involve the transformation of the curriculum which is currently underway."

He indicated that in the quest for this quality school, all efforts converging in this direction are important, including the introduction of the "Teach Primary" tool which is used to collect, measure and then analyze data relating to this what actually happens in the classroom when it comes to interactions between teachers and students.

Manigat welcomed all national and international partners, notably the World Bank for the financial support granted to the introduction of "Teach Primary" in Haitian schools, through the project "Promotion of a more equitable, sustainable and more safe in Haiti" (PROMISE), for facilitating the holding of this two-day seminar which helps observe teachers in their actions in the classroom.

According to Joseph Job Maurice, Coordinator of the Teaching and Quality Center at the Ministry, explained that "Teach Primary" can also be used as part of a professional development system for teachers, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each teacher. them and subsequently provide targeted support.

For his part, Georges Wibert Franck, the Director of the Training and Development Department (DFP), specified "It involves deploying a cohort of inspector-observers in classrooms in order to collect information to be reported at the central office of the Ministry, to guide and inform the decisions to be considered in the context of teacher training and the development of effective learning techniques, capable of meeting the real needs of students."
