Haiti - Environment : Ecological associations are concerned about projects announced without implementation
The Haitian Ecological Intervention Group (Ecovert-Haïti) and the Support Movement for the Development of Haitian Territorial Communities (MADECTH), express their concerns over the lack of implementation of certain projects announced by the Ministry of the environment...

Indeed, from January 5 to 12, 2024, a team was sent to the field to evaluate the progress of the project entitled "Improving the flow of ecosystem services in the biologically rich watersheds of the southern region of Haiti". Finding : no concrete action was observed in the project execution areas, although the project was launched on Thursday March 9, 2023 by the Ministry of the Environment, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Heifer International Haiti, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF/GEF) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-39044-haiti-environment-towards-the-restoration-of-ecosystems-in-the-south-region.html

According to the press release published during the official presentation, this project, lasting 6 years, aims to strengthen the environmental governance of the ecosystems and watersheds of Aquin/Saint-Louis-du-Sud, Cavaillon, des Cayes, Tiburon/Port-Salut, as well as the Corail/Anse-à-Veau watershed, shared between the departments of Grand'Anse and Nippes. However, consistent sources at the Ministry of the Environment claim that Minister James Cadet blocked all project activities. These two ecological associations request explanations from the Ministry and its international partners concerning the delay in the activities of this project.

Our next observation mission will take place in Nippes to follow the progress of the "Productive and Resilient Territories" (TPR) project.

As for the project "Enhanced resilience to climate change of the Trois-Rivières watershed (Northern Haiti) through integrated flood management", we noted that on Sunday December 3rd, 2023, on the sidelines of COP28, Veronica Marquez, representative of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and Pradeep Kurukulasuriya, Executive Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), signed an agreement in Dubai for the implementation of this project totaling 22.4 million USD https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41136-haiti-environment-us$224-million-for-the-trois-rivieres-watershed.html

As environmental associations, we will work tirelessly to monitor the progress of this umpteenth project of its kind in the North of Haiti...

"To date, the Ministry of the Environment has implemented nearly twenty projects [...] However, the daily life of residents remains unchanged, marked by a persistent proximity to waste, sewers and ravines, turning into open dumpsites, leading to flooding during heavy rains. Water resources are decreasing while water needs double. Forests, essential to fight climate change and guarantee water and food needs, are deteriorating to a critical point..." affirm these associations.
