Haiti - FLASH : Haiti, world ranked #2 in prison overpopulation

The overcrowding of penitentiary centers represents a danger for prisoners as well as for the population and also makes access to basic and health services difficult. According to data from the "World Prison Brief", Haiti is 1st in the region (Latin America and the Caribbean) with a prison overpopulation rate of 454%.

TOP 5 (Latin America and the Caribbean)

1 - Haiti: 454.4% (the space per detainee is a little less than 0.5 m2, far from the international standard which is 4.5 m2)

2 - Guatemala: 293%

3 - Bolivia: 264%

4 - El Salvador: 237%

5 - Brazil: 174%

According to data from the World Prison Brief, the countries with the lowest overpopulation rate are Mexico (107%) and Chile (91%).

TOP 5 worldwide:

1 - Republic of Congo: 616.9%

2 - Haiti: 454.4%

3 - Uganda: 367.4%

4 - Philippines: 363%

5 - Cambodia: 345.9%

According to data from the World Prison Brief, the countries with the lowest overpopulation rate are Mexico (107%) and Chile (91%).

"World Prison Brief" highlights that overcrowding can increase tensions and outbreaks of violence between prisoners. In addition, it promotes the spread of diseases, makes access to basic and health services difficult, and violates the human rights of detainees.
