Haiti - Culture : The Art Center won its bet and kept its promises in 2023
In a note for the new year 2024, Michèle Duvivier Pierre-Louis, President of the Board of the Art Center (Centre d’art), is pleased that the Center has won its bet and kept its promises to "make the year 2023 a once again dedicated to the promotion of Haitian art, artisans and artists.

[…] The year opened with the launch of two workshops, the first of which, led by the visual artist Pascale Monnin, allowed around fifteen young people loyal to the activities of the Art Center to journey with the artist between literature poetry, drawing, and other mediums in a tribute to Jacques Stephen Alexis, polyphonic character of our literary and political world whose birth centenary was commemorated in a thousand ways in 2022.

The second workshop was entrusted to Mario Benjamin, whose fame extends beyond our borders, who was able to bring together more than ten artists from diverse disciplines and backgrounds to transform individual imaginations into multiple creations on the theme of violence. The works produced were the subject of an exhibition at Maison Dufort supported by the French Embassy in Haiti, which attracted hundreds of visitors for several weeks. The year ended with the exhibition of the winners of the "Support for Creation" competition with the support of the Swiss Embassy in Haiti.

Recurring activities were able to be maintained, such as training, Discovery Days, Art Cinema, Support for artists, etc... but also training of staff in specialized international centers, with the aim of strengthening their capacities in specific areas, documentary archives, collection management, maintenance of works of art. Also in terms of international relations, the Executive Director was invited to UNESCO headquarters in Paris for a meeting on the importance of documentary heritage. The Haitian Art Society welcomed him during a meeting in California, where he was able to present the activities and the reconstruction project of the Art Center.

[...] If we can count everything that could have been done in 2023, and the above is only part of it, it is not easy to predict what 2024 will be like. Uncertainties persist regarding our collective future, and the warning signs that reach us in half-tone do not dispel our fears, do not answer our questions. But this year 2024 must be that of the fundraising campaign for the construction of the new premises of the Art Center.

[...] A special thank you to the members of the Board , to financial partners such as the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, the Fondation Connaissance et Liberté-FOKAL, the Fondation pour le Rayonnement de l’Art Haïtien. A big thank you also to the Executive Director and the staff; and to all artists, men and women of all ages who continue to create astonishment by transcending contingencies with dignity and pride.

Happy New Year 2024 !"
