On the afternoon of December 13, 2023, the former mayor of Cité Soleil Gustave Benoit was kidnapped by armed men from his home in Sibert. The kidnappers contacted the family and are demanding US$600,000 in exchange for the release of the former councilor, according to a relative of the family.
