Haiti - Training : «Gestures that can save lives»

The Ministry of National Education, in collaboration with the Mobile First Aid Unit / Motorized Medical Emergency Service (UMPS-SUMMOC), launched the 2023-2024 program for training students in life-saving actions.

For the first session, at the Lycée National de Pétion-ville, UMPS-SUMMOC trainers welcomed several dozen final year students from several high schools in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince

On the first day, the speakers carried out theoretical and practical simulations with the students who were very motivated for the occasion. Training, awareness and simulation, these are the three main points which marked the exchanges between trainers and students.

These trainings will prepare students to provide first aid to victims before professionals with adequate medical knowledge can see these cases. Ricardo Jean-Pierre, the coordinator of UMPS-SUMMOC, took the opportunity to inform of the first series of these training courses intended for more than 50 public and private schools in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince. This activity will extend over two months. After that, they will resume this same operation in the other nine departments.

It is good to remember that the “Gestures that can save lives” program follows the signing of the collaboration protocol on public prevention and first aid popularization services between the Ministers of Nesmy. Manigat (MENFP) and Ricardo Jean-Pierre (UMPS-SUMMOC) https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-39978-icihaiti-health-first-aid-care-in-schools.html

This is one initiative among others taken by the ministry with the aim of preparing students to provide relief and assistance to their peers and school staff who may need it in the event of illness or accident. But more generally, these training courses will be able to serve the rest of the population.
