Haiti - FLASH : At least 13 Haitians killed every day

The security situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate as gang violence has plunged the lives of Haitians into disarray and major crimes are increasing sharply to reach new records, María Isabel Salvador told the UN Security Council Special Representative of the Secretary General for Haiti and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-40815-haiti-un-intervention-on-haiti-by-maria-isabel-salvador-at-the-security-council.html adding "Basic services are on the verge of collapse and in some communities, life is more dangerous today than it has ever been."

According to a report on Haiti submitted to the Security Council, serious crimes, intentional homicides and kidnappings have seen a spectacular increase in the West and Artibonite departments. Between July 1 and September 30, 2023, the national police recorded 1,239 homicides, compared to 577 during the same period in 2022.

From July to September, 701 people, including 221 women, 8 girls and 18 boys, were victims of kidnapping, or 244% more than in 2022 over the same period.

Finally, according to the report, 395 people were lynched between April 24 and September 30, 2023 for their alleged membership in armed gangs, by the population as part of the "Bwa kale" movement.
