Following the meeting on September 26 with the various Chambers of Commerce in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-40616-haiti-economy-the-ministry-meets-the-haitian-chambers-of-commerce-on-the-border-conflict.html , Ricardin Saint-Jean, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, discussed in his office, Thursday October 5, 2023, with the Private Sector, in particular importers and manufacturers producing in Haiti, with a view to finding the best formula to respond to the immediate needs of the population in the face of the crisis of the construction of an irrigation canal in Haiti with water intake on the Massacre River having caused the total closure of the Dominican borders (land, sea and air) by the neighboring Republic.

During this meeting, the Minister assured those concerned of the Government's firm desire to work to, on the one hand, diversify commercial partners and, on the other hand, to reflect on the necessary needs in order to increase the production capacity of local industries.

At the end of this meeting lasting almost 2 hours, various proposals were put on the table by importers and local manufacturers while waiting to submit their final proposals. It should also be remembered that in this perspective a meeting is already scheduled for Tuesday, October 10 with Mexican cooperation in Haiti, with a view to exploring new commercial partners for Haiti.

It must be emphasized that through all these initiatives, the Government intends to do everything possible to alleviate the short-term consequences arising from this crisis, and above all to ensure that, in the long term, the country's dependence on import.

Should be noted that the Dominican Republic has already identified 10 new substitute trading partners for products exported to Haiti, with whom discussions are underway and the first products already being re-exported. In addition, a major financial compensation system has been put in place for tradespeople and certain industries in the country (eggs, chicken and vegetables among others, etc...)
