Haiti - Politic : Haiti and Kenya establish diplomatic relations

Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Jean Victor Géneus, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Haiti and Alfred N. Mutua, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kenya signed an agreement officially establishing dilomatic relations between the two countries.

Kenyan President William Ruto and Haitian Acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry attended the signing of the agreement at the Kenyan mission in New York.

In his intervention, President Rito called for a holistic approach including political, security and development considerations to effectively address the situation in Haiti and affirmed that Kenya would do its part by leading a multinational security support mission, endowed of sufficient and effective resources in Haiti.

For his part, Ariel Henry declared that Haiti needed all the necessary support to meet the immense challenges facing the country and stressed that the Haitian people impatiently await the elimination of the criminal gangs which have sowed terror in the country since 2021.

Text of the agreement signed by the two countries :

"Desiring to promote and strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries for the mutual benefit of the people of the Republic of Haiti and the Republic of Kenya and in the pursuit of common interests;

Guided by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, International Law and Treaties, particularly with regard to the promotion of international peace and security, equality among States, national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States and under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of April 24, 1963;

Have decided to establish diplomatic relations, from the date of signing of this Joint Communiqué and have agreed to exchange Ambassadors following the processes established through diplomatic channels;

In witness whereof, the undersigned Representatives, authorized by their respective Governments, have signed this Joint Communiqué in two original copies in French and in English, both texts being equally authentic."
