Haiti - Social : Food prices, from crisis to stability

The World Food Programme (WFP) celebrated Sunday, October 16, 2011 the World Food Day by emphasizing on the essential role, played by food aid in humanitarian crises, and after them, during the rehabilitation phase. In addition, WFP said that food assistance allows to strengthen resilience and by the same occasion the food security.

This year's theme for World Food Day "Food prices, from crisis to stability" pointed out the role of food assistance in the protection of vulnerable communities affected by price volatility.

"Here in Haiti, rising food prices has hindered the ability of the population to recover from the consequences of the earthquake of 2010," explained Myrta Kaulard, WFP Representative in Haiti. Preliminary results from a national survey conducted in conjunction with the National Coordination for Food Security (CNSA) and partners indicate that nearly one out of two in Haiti experiencing a situation of food insecurity. "WFP is concerned about this situation and believes that the best way to help improve food security is to continue to support the work of government through its school feeding programs, local purchasing, nutrition, temporary jobs, money transfers and the development of Haitian agriculture."

WFP deploys a range of tools to meet the needs of those who struggle to access the nutrition they need every day to their families.

Strengthen the capacity of countries to develop, themselves, local solutions to address the problem of hunger, as highly nutritious complementary food for children. Make available to the populations of electronic vouchers and cash to help families who can not afford food sold in shops and markets. Improve the autonomy of small farmers. The initiative "Purchase for Progress" WFP (P4P) is a pilot program in 21 countries that provides to the farmers an expertise to improve the quality and size of their performance, while helping them to be better connected to markets.
