Saturday September 2, 2023, as part of the 219th anniversary of the proclamation of Jean Jacques Dessalines as Emperor, by the General Staff and the fourth demi-brigade (September 2nd, 1804), Lesly Condé, Ex-Consul General of Haiti in Chicago delivered a message of tribute to Dessalines that we invite you all to read and share.

Message from Lesly Condé:

"Dear compatriots and friends,

One cannot prevent to think of what we would be today if the vision of Jean-Jacques Dessalines had triumphed.

We must always celebrate the life of this great man, and draw from him the imperishable lessons that can guide us, generation after generation. Jean-Jacques Dessalines is a powerful example of bravery, tenacity and foresight.

His attachment to the cause of human dignity makes him an admirable giant whose magnanimity transcends our borders. However, there are many who have sought and still seek to downplay his exploits and the importance of our country on a global scale. It is up to each of us to glorify Jean-Jacques Dessalines, to be proud of him, and to allow ourselves to be guided by his example.

His pragmatism will be particularly beneficial to us at this time because our Nation desperately needs the wisdom of all its sons.

It is to be hoped that in the not too distant future, the citizens of the country of Jean-Jacques Dessalines will find the courage and the foresight to embrace the Dessalinian ideal.

It would be doing justice to the memory of one of the most valiant beings in all of human history."
