Haiti - Carrefour-Feuilles : Open letter from a youth association to the PM

The General Coordinating Office of the l'UNION des JEUNES, faced with the critical situation prevailing in Carrefour-Feuilles, sent an open letter on Thursday August 17, 2023 to the Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry urging him to take immediate measures to put an end to the insecurity that prevails in the Carrefour Feuilles district that we reproduce in full and that we invite you to read.

"Premier Dr. Ariel Henry,

Allow me to address this open letter to you with great concern and deep disappointment regarding the critical situation that has prevailed in the Carrefour Feuilles neighborhood for nine long months now. The population of this neighborhood, already hard hit by the growing insecurity, finds itself plunged into unprecedented distress while living in total insecurity.

We have watched helplessly as the criminal gangs who terrorize and sow terror among the residents of Carrefour Feuilles. In recent months, these gangs have extended their grip on the daily life of the population, making a normal existence impossible. The streets, once full of life and joy, are now the scene of relentless violence and constant fear.

Yet, despite repeated calls from the distressed population, requests for reinforcements to fight these gangs have gone unanswered. The people of Carrefour Feuilles have been left to fend for themselves, exposed to very real dangers, without any adequate protection from the government. This prolonged inaction has exacerbated the situation and caused many of them to leave their homes, seeking refuge in the streets to escape the violence that reigns supreme.

It is hard not to see these events as the result of a government plot to force people out of their homes. The absence of concrete measures to guarantee the safety of citizens leaves room for disturbing speculations about the motives and intentions of the government. The population's confidence in the authorities is now seriously shaken, leaving a feeling of abandonment and despair.

Mr. Prime Minister, it is imperative that you act quickly and firmly to restore security and tranquility in Carrefour Feuilles. The citizens deserve to live in a safe and serene environment, where they can go about their daily business without fearing for their lives. Your duty as a leader is to protect and serve the people, ensuring a better and safer future for all.

We urge you to take immediate action to end the prevailing insecurity in the Carrefour Feuilles neighborhood. Show leadership and empathy towards your fellow citizens who are suffering. The Nation is watching you, waiting for concrete and decisive actions to restore peace and stability.

We sincerely hope that you will respond to this call with the diligence and urgency it deserves. The people of Haiti deserve a better future, and that starts with ensuring their safety and well-being.

Looking forward to prompt and decisive action from you. »
