Haiti - FLASH : Haiti under water, catastrophic situation...
While torrential rains have been falling on the country for 2 days, causing floods, inundations, landslides and extensive damage, the Government met on Saturday June 3rd, 2023 to take stock of the situation. Acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced the opening of the National Emergency Operations Center (COUN).

Marcelin Esterlin, the Director General of the Hydro-meteological Unit explained that the heavy rains which affect Haiti are not the consequences of any tropical wave, tropical depression even less of a hurricane specifying "[...] we had planned a situation where we would have three to five days of rain. It started on June 1st and will continue. This is not a situation that will improve in the coming hours because we have compact rain cells that have settled in the West and South-East departments, which explains why it's raining all the time." The probability of rain is 65% for Monday and 85% for Tuesday.

Heavy rains and overflowing rivers have already caused extensive damage across the country, leading to flooding and significant population displacement. In the North West, many towns are flooded, leaving many affected families homeless. In the capital, some roads have become impassable, mudslides in Port-au-Prince and several other regions have been reported, hospitals and health centers in the Léogâne region have been flooded. The lack of cleaning of the canals makes the situation difficult in certain areas which are already crumbling under mountains of rubbish.

Faced with the catastrophic situation created by the torrential rains and floods, the engineer Rosemond Pradel, Minister of Public Works, set up a task force and issued instructions to the Departmental Directors to take all the necessary measures to intervene effectively in the "chefs-lieux" of departments and municipalities affected by the floods…

Several ministry teams are already hard at work, particularly in Grand'Anse on the bridge, on national road #3 at Péligre, in Port de Paix in order to deal with the various difficulties faced by the population.

The work of removing alluvium, mud and rubbish deposited by the passage of water is being carried out in order to make operational certain sections cut by alluvium and tree branches and rocks...

Given the magnitude of the situation, the Ministry has triggered continuous mobilization in all departments of the country.

Given the difficult access situation on the ground, the authorities concerned are not in a position for the moment to communicate a provisional assessment of material damage and loss of life.
