Haiti - FLASH : Annual inflation remains high at 48.2% (February 2023)

For the month of February 2023, (latest data available) inflation is still very high and continues to rise, but at a slower pace, posting a monthly increase of +1.3% and a year-over-year of 48.2%, compared to +1.3% and 49.3% respectively in January 2023. This annual deceleration can be explained, among other things, by the slight improvement that was observed during the period in the availability petroleum products.

The year-on-year increase observed in February 2023 is the result of in particular consumption functions, the most important of which are:

"Food products and non-alcoholic beverages": +1.2% over one month and 48.0% over one year;

"Clothing and footwear": +1.8% over one month and 46.1% over one year;

"Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance": +1.8% over one month and 45.1% over one year

"Health" +1.6% over one month and 45.5% over one year;

"Restaurants" +2.9% over one month and 49.1% over one year.

Products with higher annual inflation:

Food:

Rice (on average 62.9%), meat (on average 63.2%), herring (on average 43.5%), edible oil (89.1%) and sugar (on average 70.2%) .

Clothing and footwear:

Dress (56.8%), shirt (59.2%), men's pants (49.3%), shoes, sneakers (54.7%) and sandals (57.1%)

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance:

Living room furniture (59.2%), dining room (62.2%), generator (78.2%) and laundry soap (54.0%).

Health:

Medicines (45.9%) and glasses with corrective lenses (60.3%).

Restaurants:

Meals eaten outside (47.1%).

As had been the case for several months, a higher price increase was observed for imported products, ie 59.4% year-on-year compared to 41.3% for local products.

General index: 48.2% over one year and +1.3% in February 2023

Food and non-alcoholic beverages: month +1.2%, year 48.0%

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco: month +1.2%, year 28.9%

Clothing and footwear: month +1.8%, year 46.1%

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels: month +1.9%, year 34.5%

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance: month +1.8%, year 45.1%

Health: month +1.6%, year 45.5%

Transport: month +0.4%, year 108.5%

Communication: month +0.3%, year 26.5%

Leisure: month +0.5%, year 30.5%

Education: month () year 11.2%

Restaurants: month +2.9%, year 47.1%

Miscellaneous goods and services: month +2.4%, year 43.8%

CPI by geographic region:

All geographic regions contributed to the increase in inflation in February 2023. However, the variation in the South is the largest with 48.7%.

Metropolitan area: year +47.8% (+1.1% over one month)

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);

Rest West: year +48.5% (+1.4% over one month)

(South-East and West Departments without the metropolitan area);

North: year +48.3% (+1.5% over one month)

(North, North East and North West Department);

South: year +48.7% (+1.4% over one month)

(Department of the South, Grande-Anse and Nippes);

Transversal: year +48.0% (+1.4% over one month)

(Department of Center and Artibonite).
