Haiti - FLASH : Haitian asylum applications in Mexico could exceed 52,000 in 2023

In the first three months of 2023, 13,631 people of Haitian origin applied for refugee status in Mexico (compared to 17,153 for the whole of 2022) according to data from the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (COMAR). ). "If the current trend continues, they will surely exceed the record level reached in 2021 (52,000)" declared Andres Ramirez, the Head of COMAR. This creates pressure on already strained migrant services in Mexico, as many Haitians (among others) begin to consider a future in this country rather than in the United States.

Part of the explanation for the increase in requests since January lies in the tightening of US border controls https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38570-haiti-flash-warning-from-jo-biden-to-haitian-migrants.html which makes it more difficult for many migrants to cross overland to the United States and Haitians without sponsorship who cannot benefit from the new 2-year temporary residence program of the Biden Administration https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38566-haiti-flash-new-us-entry-program-for-haitian-migrants-conditions-and-steps-to-follow.html

To complicate the situation, most Haitians who seek asylum in Mexico are not eligible because they left their country years ago for economic reasons and face irregular migration status and in case of refusal by the authorities. Mexicans, they are exposed to the risk of expulsion…

COMAR explains that most Haitians arriving in Mexico come from Chile and Brazil, where they resettled after the 2010 earthquake, but they left their new host lands due to bureaucratic, economic and cultural obstacles.
