Haiti - FLASH : The Wahoo Bay beach hotel, on the Côte des Arcadins, attacked, ransacked and looted

On the night of March 15 to 16, 2023, heavily armed individuals attacked, looted and ransacked the Wahoo Bay beach hotel (about thirty fully equipped rooms), located on the Côte des Arcadins (West Dept.), before returning to 2:00 in the morning leaving behind them a scene of desolation... The security of the hotel could not do anything in front of more numerous and better armed aggressors. The employees mostly fled or went into hiding.

Doors were kicked in, bay windows smashed, televisions and equipment of all kinds were destroyed, beds and furniture were taken away, the bandits threw everything to the ground and vandalized everything they could... The damage being evaluated are very important.

For Raina Forbin President of Tourist Association of Haiti (ATH). This was to be expected because it had been several months since individuals had been uttering threats against owners of hotel establishments and claiming ownership of the land... the authorities concerned had been informed of this situation (Ministry of Tourism, Justice and police force) the ATH is pessimistic about being able to attract investors after such an act and as long as the situation of insecurity is not resolved.

Reacting to this event in a note, the Ministry of Tourism "strongly condemns" the armed attack and looting against the hotel infrastructure of the Côte des Arcadins targeting Wahoo Bay Beach. "Such situations affect hotel staff but also the entire population of the Coast who live from tourist operations in this region [...] one of the growth sectors of the national economy."

"The Ministry deplores the fact that this global climate of insecurity prevents Haitians from doing local tourism and international visitors from visiting our tourist destinations."

While sympathizing with the hoteliers and with all those who invest in the tourist industry on the Côte des Arcadins "[...] the Ministry wishes to inform that the Haitian Government is doing everything possible to restore order in view the economic recovery of this area as soon as possible. »
