Haiti - Environment : Collection of native seeds in the Northeast

As part of the Government's policy to strengthen plant and forest cover in Haiti, the Departmental Directorate of the Environment (DDE) of the Northeast in collaboration with the Directorate of Forests and Renewable Energies launched on February 16 in the Northeast, the first day of the National Seed Collection Program of the Ministry of the Environment.

This first day, which took place at the Saint François Xavier School in Ouanaminthe and its surroundings, enabled the Ministry of the Environment to raise awareness among students and collect more than 315 kg of foreign mahogany seeds (Swietenia macrophylla) and elm wood (Guazuma ulmifolia).

Let's recall that this program aims to conserve native and endemic species of Haiti and especially to ensure the availability of seeds in the country. After treatment, the seeds collected will be sent to the Germplasm Centers and community nurseries of the Ministry of the Environment throughout the national territory.
