As part of the 219th anniversary of Haiti's independence, Weibert Arthus the Ambassador of Haiti to Canada delivered a message of circumstance that we invite you to read:

Message from Weibert Arthus Ambassador of Haiti to Canada :

"My dear compatriots,

Friends of Haiti in Canada, Happy New Year 2023!

This year we celebrate the 219th anniversary of Haiti's existence as a free and independent nation. Our ancestors bequeathed this land to us at the cost of enormous sacrifices, defeating one of the most powerful armies of the time and with it, an economic system based on the slave trade and slavery. Today, 219 years later, it is up to our generation, in Haiti as in the diaspora, to maintain the ideal of freedom and to make Haiti a prosperous Nation for the benefit of everyone.

This year also marks 69 years of diplomatic relations with Canada, one of Haiti's staunchest allies. In 2022, our diplomatic representation worked hard with many partners to further promote Haiti's interests and better serve the Haitian community in Canada. However, the efforts and work accomplished by each member of our Embassy in Ottawa, our Consulate General in Montreal and our Honorary Consulate in Toronto would be insignificant without the active involvement of personalities and Haitian-Canadian associations, which, for their actions advance the cause of Haiti in Canada.

Many challenges await our country in 2023. It is together, as in 1804, that we will overcome them in unity beyond our differences. Let us be inspired by the ideal of 'living well and living together' of our valiant ancestors to pool efforts and make 2023 a prosperous year for our dear Haiti and for Canada."

The Ambassador of Haiti to Canada accompanied by a delegation from the mission and some representatives of the community proceeded, on January 1st, 2023, to the raising of the Haitian flag at Ottawa City Hall, at the occasion of the commemoration of the 219th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Haiti.
