Haiti - Gang war : Nearly 10,000 people fled their homes in Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite

From October 18 to December 15, 2022, nearly 10,000 people had to flee their homes in Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite, following a territory war between gangs, confirmed Saturday, December 17 the Town Hall of Petite-Rivière according to a provisional census carried out by the town hall in collaboration with Civil Protection and a Crisis Committee.

The preliminary report indicates, among other things, that about 1,200 people took refuge in Liancourt, 2,400 in Saint-Marc, 374 in Gonaïves, 300 in Lachapelle, 450 in Marchand Dessalines and 45 in Cap Haitien, while the conflict between armed groups fighting for control of the area intensified.

According to the latest report published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The number of people displaced by gang-related violence in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, has tripled in the last five months.

According to IOM surveys carried out between June and August 2022, more than 113,000 people are considered displaced in Haiti. Of this number, 96,000 people fled insecurity in the capital, due to clashes between gangs and social unrest (Martissant, Cité Soleil and Croix-des-Bouquets among others.
