Haiti - Agriculture : The aquaponics project is progressing in its implementation in Kenskoff
A group of 10 agricultural technicians from the organization Haitian Solidarity for Rural Development of Kenscoff (SOHADERK) participated in Phase I of the Training Plan on the implementation of aquaponic systems, carried out as part of the AQUHAÏTI project, an initiative led by the Tecnova Technological Center, the CIDEAL Foundation and the SOHADERK Association, with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID).

This training was carried out through a virtual platform activated as part of the project, given the difficulties of carrying it out in person due to the insecurity situation in Haiti. The first phase consisted of the progressive delivery of 6 training modules in the management of aquaponic systems, crop production, integrated pest management, economic or post-harvest management.

Along with these theoretical modules, a series of practical advice sessions were offered on the development of crops, as well as continuous monitoring for the resolution of doubts and incidents by the beneficiaries.

Let's recall that the objective of this project is to contribute to the development of the rural community of Kenscoff in Haiti, with the implementation of new agricultural practices that are more sustainable with natural resources, which at the same time increase productivity, attack the collection of malnutrition through self-consumption and reduce dependence on imports.

To this end, an aquaponic system consisting of an 800 m2 multitunnel structure has been set up in the area, which combines an indoor area of 600 m2 for growing vegetables and 200 m2 for the installation of aquariums (fish farming or aquaculture).

In a next phase, the 10 agricultural technicians who participated in the training will in turn train more than 100 farmers in the municipality of Kenskoff.

Learn more about aquaponics :
Aquaponics consists of the cultivation of plants in symbiosis with the breeding of fish. It is an ecosystem in which three types of organisms are involved: Fish, whose droppings are the source of nutrients for plants, in the form of fertilizer. Aerobic bacteria that transform manure into nitrates that can be assimilated by plants in mineral form and cultivated plants that purify water.
