Haiti - FLASH : At least 2,760 people killed in 10 months in the metropolitan area of the capital

Antonal Mortimé, Co-Director of Collectif Défenseur Plus, a leading group of human rights organizations in Haiti, said Monday, November 28, 2022 that "[...] 2,769 people were killed in the metropolitan area of capital from January 1 to October 30, 2022" adding "[...] this figure does not include people who died in hospitals after being attacked and injured."

Mortimé specified that 85% of the people were shot dead, while 25% were victims of collective violence or stabbing attacks.

Several human rights groups have drawn attention to an exponential increase in violence and its trivialization in Haiti "Many times you see corpses lying on the ground, while everyone goes about their normal business , as if nothing had happened [...] Therefore, what should have been considered tragic is considered normal," lamented Mortimé.

Another human rights group, Justice and Peace (JILAP), a social pastoral institution of the Catholic Church, said it had collected data showing that at least 863 people had been killed, mainly by bullets, from January to November 2022 "863 were killed, including 792 by bullets. Among those killed were 83 women, 11 children and 38 police officers," said Jocelyne Colas, National Director of JILAP over the weekend, who admitted that the figures published by her organization represent a very cautious about the total number of victims since the beginning of the year.
