Haiti - Politic : It is unlikely that Brazil will provide military assistance to Haiti

The new Brazilian government of Lula da Silva (which will take office on January 1st, 2023) is unlikely to provide military assistance to Haiti to confront the gangs despite calls from the UN for an international armed intervention force.

"Any Brazilian participation would be difficult, globally in a multinational force," said Celso Amorim, foreign policy adviser to President Lula da Silva (twice Minister of Foreign Affairs (1993 - 1994 and 2003-2010) and Minister of Defense (2011 -2014)

Amorim recalled that Brazil's military participation in MINUSTAH (2004 to 2017), had been very unpopular in the country and had brought many problems internally.

According to a Brazilian official who requested anonymity, in recent weeks the US Embassy has made informal contacts to ask if Brazil would be willing to participate in an armed military intervention force. For his part, he considers Brazil's participation in such a force "unlikely".

The outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has made no comment on a possible participation in a military operation in Haiti.

Let's recall that the Security Council has still not passed a resolution authorizing the use of an armed intervention force to fight against gangs in Haiti, encountering the reluctance of China and Russia.
