Haiti - Cholera : AFD allocates $300,000 urgently to the GHESKIO Center

More than 30 deaths, hundreds of hospitalizations and more than 800 suspected cases have been counted by Haitian health authorities since the first confirmed case of reappearance of cholera in Haiti on October 2, 2022.

Faced with this resurgence of the epidemic in the country, the GHESKIO Centers are calling for rapid action while waiting for international humanitarian aid to reach the populations.

In response to this call, the French Development Agency (AFD) held an emergency meeting with GHESKIO officials, following which France undertook via AFD to reallocate an amount $300,000 to the fight against cholera in Haiti.

From the funds granted to GHESKIO as part of the response to Covid-19, this first envelope will make it possible to set up community interventions, epidemiological surveillance, and better care for patients, in particular children. More specifically, the reallocated funds will promote sanitation, the collection of specimens, the purchase of inputs and equipment.

The actions will start immediately on the two GHESKIO intervention sites in the city of Port-au-Prince and in the commune of Tabarre. The immediate operationalization of the GHESKIO teams will be based on the achievements of two Covid-19 response projects financed by AFD (2.7 million euros), which have enabled GHESKIO to develop its integrated epidemiological surveillance and strengthen its patient care unit.

Following this emergency response, AFD plans to mobilize other funds to curb the spread of cholera and consolidate the achievements of the first interventions.
