Haiti - FLASH : The United States does not exclude the idea of an international intervention in Haiti

On Monday, September 26, the United States would prepare to table a resolution at the United Nations Security Council, which would establish a new framework for sanctioning gang leaders in Haiti, and would not rule out international intervention in Haiti which is sinking into a crisis without precedent since the beginning of the 1990s…

Brian A. Nichols, the Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, said Friday, September 23, in an interview with the Miami Herald, "The Biden administration expects rapid passage of this resolution in the coming days," pointed out Nichols, specifying that "the resolution will create a framework for the United Nations to impose sanctions on gang leaders and those who support them, facilitate and finance their activities [...] Harsh sanctions will target their financial resources and their ability to travel."

Brian A. Nichols specifies, "Nothing in the resolution should prevent the legitimate transfer of weapons to Haiti's government security forces."

The return of a multinational force to Haiti requires Haiti to resubmit to the set of provisions of the United Nations Charter commonly referred to as "Chapter 7" which allows the Security Council to deploy international forces as part of a peacekeeping mission.

Nicholas. Is convinced that "if the Government of Haiti requests this assistance, the international community would certainly consider such a request" adding "there is currently no discussion on a response to the situation in Haiti under the Chapter 7."
