Haiti - FLASH : Inflation breaks records and crosses the 30% mark

The General Consumer Price Index (CPI, 100 in 2017-2018) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26268-haiti-economy-a-new-index-of-consumer-prices-more-efficient.html ) showed in July 2022, a strong monthly variation of +3.2% and an annualized increase of 30.5%, against respectively +2.2% and 29.0% in June 2022 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37369-haiti-flash-inflation-accelerates-and-reaches-29.html

The monthly increase observed in July 2022 is mainly the result of the behavior of the following consumption indices:

"Food products and non-alcoholic beverages" : +3.9% over one month or 32.7% over one year;

"Clothing and footwear" : +3.5% over one month or 33.6% over one year;

"Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance" : +3.4% over one month or 29.6% over one year);

"Restaurant" : +3.5% over one month or 30.4% over one year;

Products with more pronounced annual inflation :

Food :

Rice (on average 46.9%), pearl millet (26.1%), chicken (44.8%), powdered milk (47.4%), fresh fish (59.3%), edible oil (91.2%), dried peas (31.4%), sugar on average (48.1%) and malta (25.9%).

Clothing and footwear :

Dress (44.6%), suit (38.8%), shirt (40.7%) and pants for men (35.0%).

"Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance" :

Mattress (43.%), generator (46.4%) and refrigerator (40.7%)

Clothing and footwear :

Dress (44.6%), suit (38.8%), shirt (40.7%) and pants for men (35.0%).

Restaurants :

Meals taken outside, i.e. outside the accommodation (30.4%).

A higher price increase was observed at the level of imported products, i.e. +1.5% monthly and 43.2% year-on-year against +1.4% monthly and 23.2% year-on-year for local products.

Consumer Price Index for the whole country by consumption function :

General index : 30.5% over one year and +3.2% over the month of July 2022

Food and non-alcoholic beverages : month +3.9%, year 32.7%

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco : month (+2.5%) , year (19.4)%

Clothing and footwea r: month +3.5%, year 33.6%

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels : month +1.7%, year 30.3%

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance : month +3.4%, year 29.6%

Health : month +3.1%, year 26.4%

Transport : month +1.9%, year 34.3%

Communication : month +1.9%, year 9.4%

Leisure : month +2.2%, year 18.6%

Education : month (), year 7.9%

Restaurants : month +3.5%, year 30.4%

Miscellaneous goods and services : month +3.1%, year 28.8%

Global CPI : 2021 July 12.3%; August 10.9%; September 13.1%; October 19.7%; November 24.6%; December 24.7% 2022 January 24.0%; February 25.2%; March 25.9%; April 26.7%; May 27.7%; June 29.0%; July 30.5%

CPI by geographic region :

The most significant variations in July 2022 year-on-year relate to: South (33.1%), Rest West (30.7%) and Metropolitan Area (31.0%).

Metropolitan area : year +31.0% (+3.4% over one month)

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);

Rest West : year +30.7% (+3.0% over one month)

(South-East and West Departments without the metropolitan area);

North : year +29.2% (+3.2% over one month)

(North, North East and North West Department);

South : year +33.1% (+3.5% over one month)

(Department of the South, Grande-Anse and Nippes);

Transversal : year +28.8% (+3.0% over one month)

(Department of Center and Artibonite).
