Haiti - FLASH : Shipwreck in the Bahamas 16 Haitians dead and 21 survivors (provisional report)

On the night of Sunday, July 24, 2022, around 1:30 a.m., a twin-engine boat in which there were at least 38 illegal Haitians capsized about 13 km off New Providence in the Bahamas archipelago, official Bahamian sources reported to the in the midst of a continuous wave of migrants of Haitian origin bound for the United States.

During the night, 21 people (4 women and 17 men) were rescued by the US Coast Guard, confirmed Keith Bell, Minister of Immigration of the Bahamas.

Rescue teams had to wait until dawn to begin the search, the Bahamas immigration official said. So far 16 dead bodies have been found. Among the victims, there are women and children, although for the moment no other details have been communicated.

Rescue operations to find survivors continue...

"We mourn lives lost of those seeking a better way of life," said Minister Bell, adding, "Those here with families and friends in Haiti, encourage your loved ones not to risk their lives."

Let's remember that the Bahamas is a frequent transit route for Haitian migrants seeking to reach the United States. Dangerous sea voyages aboard overcrowded and derelict ships have become increasingly common over the past year as Haitians flee poverty and rising gang violence.

The Coast Guard recalls that for the current fiscal year 2021-2022 ending next October, 1,031 Haitian migrants who were trying to reach the United States illegally were intercepted in the Bahamas...
