Haiti - UN : Intervention at the Security Council of the United States on Haiti

Thursday, June 16 in the afternoon before the opening of the UN Security Council several countries intervened on the situation in Haiti, including the American Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield Representative Representative of the United States to the United Nations as well as the Security Council.

Excerpts from Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s speech :

Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the Council will again express concern over gang violence, insecurity and dire conditions in Haiti, and condemn the horrific toll of violence on women and children, emphasizing "However, only Haiti's leaders can take substantive action, and until they choose to do so, years-long discussions toward a political agreement will remain fundamental challenges to an electoral process. The time is over for Haitian stakeholders and competing coalitions to find consensus."

Adding "The United States will continue to support efforts for an inclusive Provisional Electoral Council, but the Government of Haiti must do the technical work to organize free and fair elections when conditions permit." Given the conditions, the United States will also provide increased assistance to build the capacity of the Haitian National Police and help improve citizen security.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield said "[...] the current political stalemate, human rights conditions and poverty only underscore the importance of BINUH [United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti]" affirming "[...] the special political mission remains the configuration recommended by the United Nations to solve the problem [...] but if BINUH and a solid presence of the United Nations are essential, they do not replace the reforms to be undertaken by Haitian leaders."
