Haiti - Education : The education sector in the Great South, 8 months after the earthquake

Thursday, April 21, 2022, a meeting of the extended Cabinet of the Minister of National Education Nesmy Manigat was held, which was mainly devoted to the situation of the education sector after the major earthquake of magnitude 7.2 which hit the southern peninsula August 14, 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34681-haiti-earthquake-latest-assessment-of-civil-protection.html

During his opening speech, Minister Manigat summarized some major difficulties faced by the Departmental Directorates of Education (DDE) of Nippes, South and Grand-Anse. Above all, he emphasized the organizational fragility of these three DDEs, which face a glaring lack of qualified and competent human resources to lead strategic functions.

Beyond the structural problems, the education sector in the Great South is trying to recover thanks to the joint efforts of the State and its national and international partners. These efforts concern, among other things : the development and rehabilitation of semi-permanent reception sites for schools, the distribution of school kits, the deployment of the school canteen program, the organization of several training workshops on the management of Risks and local management in schools...

However, these efforts, as important as they are, only address some of the needs which remain immense at all levels : rehabilitation or reconstruction of school buildings; full return of children to school; support in school materials for students (distribution of textbooks, uniforms, etc...), teachers (distribution of educational and didactic kits); support for schools (need for furniture, etc...)

These three DDEs also suffer from other historical and persistent difficulties. Directors Jean Marcel Jeanty (DDE of Grand-Anse), Jean Désir Sylvain (DDE of South) and Jean Nelson Pierre (DDE of Nippes) unanimously mention the need for qualified and competent human resources for administrative and technical tasks at the of the offices of the departmental directorates and for the educational tasks at the level of the schools.
