Haiti - Environment : Adaptation to Climate Change, Haiti needs more than $980 million

The Ministry of the Environment and that of Planning and External Cooperation in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) held a workshop with the aim of carrying out the technical validation of the document "National Plan Adaptation to Climate Change (PNA)". It should be recalled that for the production of this document, 12 consultation workshops at the national level with the participation of civil society, sectoral ministries and local authorities were carried out.

This validation workshop, which brought together several actors from civil society, the private sector and sectoral ministries, took place in a hybrid face-to-face and remote format.

It was James Cadet, the Minister of the Environment, who officially launched the work in the presence, among others, of the Directors General of his Ministry and that of Planning, the Director of the National Bank for Agricultural Development (BNDA), executives UNDP Haiti and representatives of Civil Society.

In his opening remarks, the Minister recalled that the NAP is the result of technical consultations, the concerns of the key sectors of the country underlining "The vision of the plan promotes a resilient recovery in the face of multiple and complex hazards by adopting innovative and sustainable approaches based on an inclusive and coordinated process”.

The workshop was led by consultant Dr. Kénel Delusca who, in his interventions, presented the different stages of the work that take into account the challenges that Haiti is facing and the different axes that the country must prioritize in its adaptation actions.

Explaining that the PNA is made up of 340 adaptation actions at the national level, including 21 high priority actions which require an envelope of more than 980 million dollars over 9 years. These actions relate, among other things, to climate-smart agriculture, irrigation infrastructure, integrated water resource management, reforestation and agroforestry, watershed management, capacity building and disease prevention. .

Speaking to close the workshop, Astrel Joseph the Director General of the Ministry of the Environment invited the stakeholders not to give up. Emphasizes that "the willingness of the actors to produce this document testifies to the importance they attach to republican institutions to work for a better tomorrow for humanity in the face of climate risks."
