Haiti - Social : Food Security, Haiti in phase 2, before the famine...

The National Coordination for Food Security (CNSA) said on Thursday that Haiti is on the brink of famine due to drought, earthquakes and weather phenomena that hit the country and that it is difficult for Haitians to find food.

"Right now, people are in what we call a situation of phase two: it is difficult to find food," said the representative of this institution, the agronomist Gary Mathies, the Phase 3 is a famine situation, however the CNSA is concerned that if a hurricane affects the agricultural production, we could enter phase 3.

He stressed that "due to the political social and natural factors, in a few months the amount of food will not be adequate enough for the nation", which will put people in a situation of food insecurity, adding that the increase in the inflation rate recently reported [close to 10%] had "made the situation more difficult" for the Haitians. Moreover, "since the election of March some ministries do not disburse money and the investors are in a situation of waiting" deplores M. Mathies.

The representative of the National Coordination for Food Securitysaid that the lack of rain in March 2011 has also "damaged the gricultural production planned for August and September", there will be an amount of food less than expected.
