23 years ago, following the passage of Category 4 Hurricane Georges [Sept. 1998], a group of doctors and nurses from Cuba arrived as reinforcements in Haiti. This is how the long history of the Cuban Medical Brigade (BMC) began in our country.

For more than two decades now, the Brigade has kept the promise of the late Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-1995-haiti-health-fidel-castro-12-years-of-cuban-cooperation.html , to continue to help the Haitian people in all circumstances.

Luis Orlando Oliveros, coordinator of the BMC recalled that the Cuban brigade in addition to cyclone Georges, were among other things also in action during the serious flooding of Gonaïves, during the earthquake of 2010, during the cholera epidemic, at the passage of Hurricane Mathew in the southern region and more recently with the Covid-19 pandemic.

During its 23 years of uninterrupted work, the Cuban Brigade has carried out in Haiti nearly 35 million consultations, 660,000 surgeries and 192,414 deliveries. Rehabilitation services treated 200,741 patients and the orthotics and prosthetics workshop manufactured 2,558 devices, Oliveros summed up.

Currently, Cuban doctors and specialists are present in Haiti in 18 referral community hospitals, various health centers, 19 rehabilitation rooms and two departmental hospitals.
