Last Friday, the National Police of Haiti (PNH), has proceeded, to the inauguration of the new police substation of Portail Léogâne. This ceremony took place in the presence, among others, of Kenneth Merten, U.S. Ambassador to Haiti and about twenty young people of Martissant, trained in construction trades, who have participated for several weeks to the rehabilitation and expansion works of the former substation, completely remodeled in a modern manner. This project was conducted by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of its aid to rebuild the country, in collaboration with the Haitian Government.

The Ambassador Kenneth Merten said that this partnership included other construction, taking advantage of the occasion to announce: the construction of a police station to the Wharf of Cité Soleil and to Route des dalles the expansion of national penitentiary and the construction of a prison for women well as the renovation of several other institutions across the country.

The Ambassador reiterated the commitment of the United States, to bring its contribute to the Police Nationale d'Haiti (PNH), and the judiciary. "We know that the security is essential to the stability that it is necessary to regain, if you want to reach the prosperity and the development of the country"

The inhabitants of Portail Léogâne, are convinced that the new substation will help to reduce the acts of banditry and intimidation they face daily. However, they point out that the security should not be limited to the construction of beautiful buildings "The important thing is not the construction of the building, but to provide to the police officers the means to do their job" said a resident.
