Haiti - FLASH : Inflation explodes +4.6% in one month

The General Consumer Price Index (CPI, 100 in 2017-2018) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34906-haiti-economy-acceleration-of-the-rise-in-prices-for-2-months.html went from 180.4 in September 2021 to 188.7 in October 2021. This resulted in a monthly increase of + 4.6% in October against + 1.4% in September hhttps://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35163-haiti-economy-sharp-rise-in-inflation-+35-in-2-months.html and 19.7% year-on-year against 13.1% the previous month (latest data available). This year-on-year acceleration is partly explained by the pronounced rise in the prices of imported products (more than 26.1%).

The monthly increase observed in September 2021 is mainly the result of the behavior of the following consumption indices:

"Food products and non-alcoholic drinks" : + 5.9% over one month and 22.7% over one year;

"Articles of clothing and footwear" : + 4.1% over one month and 20.2% over one year;

"Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance" : + 4.0% over one month and 21.2% over one year;

"Health" : + 2.3% over one month and 27.3% over one year.

Products with more pronounced annual inflation :

Food :

Rice (on average 34.6%), meat (on average 23.8%), powdered milk (21.4%), edible oil (43.6%), lemon (31.0%), banana (25.6%), peas (on average 20.6 %) and sugar (23.3%).

Articles of clothing and footwear :

Dress (on average 28.1%), shirt (20.9%), men's pants (21.1%), shoes and sneakers (25.1%) and sandals (23.3%).

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance :

Dining room (on average 43.3%), bed (42.9%) and mattress (43.7%)

Health :

Medicines (on average 32.6%) and glasses with corrective lenses (25.7%).

It should be noted that a greater price increase was observed for imported products, ie 26.1% year-on-year against 16.2% for local products.

Consumer Price Index for the whole country by consumption function :

General index: 19.7% over one year and + 4.6% over the month of October 2021

Food and non-alcoholic drinks: month + 5.9%, year + 22.7%

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco: month 4.2%, year (8.2)%

Clothing and footwear: month + 4.1%, year + 20.2%

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels: month + 3.4%, year + 17.0%

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance: month + 4.0%, year + 21.2%

Health: month + 2.3%, year + 27.3%

Transport: month + 1.1%, year + 5.3%

Communications: month + 0.8%, year + 4.5%

Leisure: month + 2.8%, year + 15.0%

Education: month 2.3%, year + 12.8%

Restaurants: month 2.9%, year + 27.2%

Miscellaneous goods and services: month + 4.0%, year + 21.1%

Global CPI : 2020 October 21.6%; November 20.1%; December 19.2%; 2021 January 18.7%; February 17.9%; March 17.2%. April 16.0%; May 14.5%; June 12.7%; July 12.3%; August 10.9%; September 13.1%; October 19.7%

Local Products CPI : 2020 October 21.7%; November 20.1%; December 19.1%; 2021 January 18.5%; February 17.3%; March 16.9%; April 15.7; June 11.8%; July 10.8%; August 9.3%; September 10.9%; October 16.2%

CPI of imported products : 2020 October 21.4%; November 20.0%; December 19.3%; 2021 January 19.0%; February 18.3%; March 17.5%; April 16.5%; June 14.2%; July 14.9; August 13.8%; September 17.1%; October 26.1

CPI by geographic region (Septemre 2021) :

All regions therefore contributed to the increase in inflation in October 2021 for the country as a whole. It should be noted, however, that the most significant regional variations compared to October 2020 are observed for the Rest West and the South, which posted 120.8% and 20.9% respectively.

Metropolitan area : month + 4.4%, year + 19.1%

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);

Rest West : month + 4.8%, year + 20.8%

(Departments of the Southeast and the West without the metropolitan area);

North : month + 4.4%, year + 19.1%

(Department of North, North East and North West);

South: month + 4.8%, year + 20.9%

(Department of South, Grande-Anse and Nippes);

Cross-sectional : month + 4.6%, year + 19.3%

(Department of Center and Artibonite).
