Haiti - Social : National debate tournament

The project Wave of the Future (VDF) is organizing from August 7 to 11, 2011, a summer camp in Hinche, to the Centre Emmaüs, in the Central Plateau. 90 participants including 56 youth, 28 animators, from 14 clubs VDF in the country, and 6 other resource persons are expected to attend this annual event. The summer camp aims to promote the encounter between young people from different clubs of the project : Cap-Haïtien, Gros Morne, Fonds Parisien, Léogane, Jacmel, Cayes, Camp-Perrin, Jérémie and Port-au-Prince (Bon Repos, Côte-Plage, Martissant, Downtown, Christ-Roi, Santo).

Each club will be represented by a delegation of 6 people (4 young accompanied by 2 responsible). These young people are selected by the two responsible of their club based on their commitment and their behavior in the club, and of their experience of the debate.

This camp is also an opportunity to make an update on the network, to carry out training activities, and of recreation (sport, projection, exhibition cultural excursion) with young people on issues that interest them.

This is obviously the ideal time to make a national tournament of debate in which teams from clubs will defend their arguments on controversial topics. Tournament debates will focus on two topical issues in the country, that have already been the subject of thinking in the weekly meetings of clubs: the universal free school and the levies on transfers of money to Haiti. A third surprise-subject will be discussed at this competition. 16 teams will compete, from the elimination round until the final.

Materials will be provided to participants, including T-shirts and caps, stamped VDF, and a kit of work materials (pens, notepads, pencils). Resource persons are engaged to provide training on specific topics such as public communication, debate techniques, first aid, protection against major natural hazards.

The organization of this summer camp is fully supported by the FOKAL and is carried each year in a provincial town different.
