In 2021, applications for refugees and protected status in Mexico increased by 300% compared to 2019 figures, reported the Secretaríat of Government (SeGob). Of the total number of refugee claims, 52,000 (Nov. 2021) come from people from Haiti, which is going through a serious political and social crisis exacerbated by the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7.

Monday, November 22 Alejandro Encinas the Under-Secretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration of SeGob, signed an agreement with Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Grandi declared "We will continue to strengthen the asylum system and to seek solutions to the challenges of human mobility in the region. During a meeting with the Government, I recognized the solidarity and hospitality of the Mexican people.

Grandi recalled that the UNHCR is developing a professional integration program in 11 Mexican cities, whose work has started in Saltillo, a town on the border with the United States in the state of Coahuila de Coahuila de Zaragoza (North).

Alejandro Encinas explained that the Mexican Government is trying to extend this program to people who are not subject to international protection, considering it necessary to strengthen the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) to deal with the significant increase in asylum requests, following the massive arrival of Haitians on the national territory of Mexico.
