Haiti - Assassination of the President : Haitian businessman Samir Handal in prison in Istanbul for 40 days

Let's recall that the Turkish authorities arrested on Monday, November 15, 2021 the Haitian businessman Samir Handal at Istanbul airport, upon his arrival on a Turkish Airlines flight from Miami, in transit to Jordan https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35253-haiti-flash-samir-handal-suspect-in-the-assassination-of-president-moise-arrested-in-turkey.html

Samir Handal, who had managed to leave Haiti last July after the assassination of President Moïse https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34162-haiti-flash-president-jovenel-moise-assassinated-by-mercenaries-official-updated-7am-+-video.htmlwas traveling with Haitian and Jordanian passports and a Palestinian travel document at the time of his arrest.

According to the Turkish authorities, Samir Handal was wanted by the Haitian authorities https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-34395-icihaiti-assassination-of-the-president-5-new-suspects.html and also under a notice international red from Interpol. Samir Handal is suspected by the Haitian authorities of complicity in the plot that led to the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. However, the Haitian authorities have never disclosed the degree of alleged involvement or role of Samir Handal in this plot.

Following his questioning by Turkish judicial authorities, the Turkish Ministry of Justice issued a 40-day temporary custody order and Handal was held in Maltepe prison (east of Istanbul), Turkish state news agency "Anadolu" reported.

He did not explicitly mention whether Haiti would request the extradition of Samir Handal, but he mentioned "[...] We will continue diplomatic efforts with Turkey so that Samir Handal is transferred quickly to Haiti and appear front justice..."
