Haiti - Pointe-Sable : The ground sagged at least 50cm and the coast moved 30m

A multidisciplinary delegation went to Pointe-Sable, Cayemites Islands (Dept. Grand'Anse), to assess the situation that has prevailed in this community since the earthquake of August 14, 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes.html

According to the first technical reports, the locality of Pointe Sable is now inundated daily by marine submersion, due to liquefaction that has caused the ground to sink by at least 50 centimeters. As a result, a penetration of the sea into the affected area during high tides, in the morning and afternoon, and a displacement of the coast of about thirty meters.

The delegation recommends the urgent displacement of the affected population (around 250 families) and the relocation of the community.

As a first step, a protective dike will have to be erected on the Pointe Sable coastline and subsequently repopulated the mangrove.

The Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC) and the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME) forward their recommendations to the highest level of the National Risk Management System in order to be able to mobilize the necessary resources to help population.
