Haiti - Weather : Emily is coming, Haiti in red...

The National Meteorological Center (CNM) has put this Tuesday morning, his level of vigilance in RED, after a slight acceleration of Tropical Storm Emily, born the previous day to 7:00 pm near the Lesser Antilles.

To 7am, this Tuesday, the center of the Tropical Storm Emily was located to 15.3 degrees north and 63.7 degrees West. At 985 km northwest of Port au Prince (612 miles) with sustained winds (maximum) of 65 km/h (40 mph). Emily is currently moving at 22 km/h (14 mph) along a trajectory West and could hit the Dominican Republic and Haiti in the next 24 to 48 hours [Thursday for Haiti if the speed is maintained]. 10 of the 12 forecast models plan the passage of Emily on Haiti.

Following the current trajectory, Emily is located at:

1117 km (694 mi) of Les Cayes

996 km (619 mi) of Jacmel

757 km (470 mi) of Santo Domingo

612 km (380 mi) of Punta Cana

432 km (268 mi) of Ponce (Porto-Rico)

Risk of heavy rain with high winds, increased risk of mudslides, landslides and floods across the country, because of the extreme vulnerability of certain departments. The responsible authorities have activated the Emergency Operations Center and ask to the population living in areas at risk of flood, landslide, landslide to follow these guidelines:

  • Stay tuned to weather reports

  • Put out of water all the thing that can be damaged by flood

  • Consolidate the iron roofs and tents in the camps

  • Build food reserves

  • Prepare to evacuate if necessary the areas exposed to flooding and landslides: flood plains, seashores, ravines, rivers, mountain slopes, etc...

  • Do not cross overflowing rivers for any reason.

  • In case of severe thunderstorms, do not shelter near windows and in the woodlands.

The Department coordinations, municipal and local committees, and the Fire Volunteers of the civil defense stand ready to intervene if necessary, while the CNM continue to monitor closely the evolution of Emily to inform the public.
