Haiti - Migration crisis : The USA repatriated more than 3,700 Haitians in 8 days

Haiti - Migration crisis : The USA repatriated more than 3,700 Haitians in 8 days

Between September 19 and September 26, 2021, in 43 flights (including 6 Tuesday, September 28) more than 3,700 Haitians, just under half of whom are women and children, were repatriated from the United States to Haiti at the level of Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien airports.

Our compatriots were welcomed by the National Migration Office (ONM), supported by several United Nations agencies including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to ensure that their return takes place in dignity, and this despite growing humanitarian and security challenges.

Despite limited response capacities, the ONM and humanitarian actors provide assistance for every Haitian, enabling them to cover their basic needs during the first days of their return to Haiti.

According to IOM, the protection risks for these people remain high, especially for women and children. The daily and structural difficulties experienced by a large part of the Haitian population with regard to access to basic services, adequate housing and food in particular, only accentuate the vulnerabilities of these migrants. The insecurity prevailing in some areas of the capital also increases these protection risks. The lack of employment opportunities can also represent an obstacle to their reintegration in the medium and long term.

Mark Morgan, former commissioner of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Biden administration has reinstated "the capture and release program." It stopped the migrant protection program. This means that if you are an unaccompanied minor, you are released in the United States. If you are a family you are released in the United States. If you are a single adult, the majority will be deported." He estimates that the number of migrants who have entered the United States is over 12,000 due to the 360 km of the Del Rio border difficult to monitor" convinced that it is "[...] a humanitarian crisis that was prompted by the open border policies of the Biden Administration."

US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejadro Mayorka said over the weekend regarding Haitian immigrants who entered the United States, "We have put in place enforcement guidelines that provide that people who have recently crossed the border, who do not appear at their hearings will be expelled" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34828-haiti-flash-no-more-migrants-under-the-del-rio-bridge.html

Adding that the number of people deported so far could become much higher after the dismantling by the Federal Government of some other irregular camps erected along the southern border.

For Morgan "The immigrants they release to the United States, their first hearing is scheduled two and a half to three years later, so it's an absolute lie [...] The US government knows full well that the majority of these migrants will not show up for their hearing and will have fled and will not be wanted."
