Haiti - DR : President Abinader urges UN countries to assume Haiti «once and for all»

The Dominican President Luis Abinader during his participation in the 76 General Assembly of the United Nations in New York categorically asked the member countries of the United Nations (UN) to assume "urgently" the crisis that Haiti is going through, stressing from the rostrum that Haiti is not in a position to move forward on its own and that the Dominican Republic cannot bear this burden.

In his intervention concerning Haiti he warned of "the possibility that the Haitian situation could go beyond the borders of Haiti and become a factor of insecurity in the region" and that because of this possibility "[...]It is necessary for the international community to assume once and for all the Haitian crisis as one of the highest priorities and to ensure permanent monitoring" Emphasizing that the measures recently adopted by some Governments are not enough.

Abinader insisted "[...] it is imperative to express as firmly and frankly that the international community must not, and cannot, abandon the Haitian people at this time when the levels of insecurity are leading to their self-destruction [...] Given the current division that exists between the Haitian leadership and the dangerous presence of criminal gangs that control part of the territory, Haitians alone will not be able to pacify their country, much less guarantee the conditions for establishing a minimum order."

The Dominican Head of State stressed that the most important thing at the moment was security in Haiti and that it was only after having carried out "thet free, fair elections, inclusive and reliable can take place."

"Then, with a new Government as a legitimate interlocutor, a real global plan for economic and social development must be prepared, with all the necessary means and jointly supported by the international community, because it is no longer possible to think only of humanitarian measures."

At the end of his intervention Abinader declared to the press "Haiti is already more than a Haitian problem, it is a problem that affects us too, it is already becoming a regional problem" citing the situation of the thousands of haitians blocked to Del Rio at the Border and the 19,000 others in Panama who are waiting for authorization to transit... adding "We hope that the international community will act, but in the meantime, we will take all measures to protect our country."
