The Technical Directorate of the National Emergency Operations Center (COUN) during a working meeting with representatives of the sectors involved in the management of the response to the major earthquake of 7.2 on the Richter scale of August 14 2021, which hit the Great South, announced that the search and rescue mission for survivors will end this Friday, September 3, 2021, in the three departments of the Great South (South, Nippes and Grand'Anse).

The COUN recalled that since August 14, several rescue teams have worked in the field to extract survivors from the rubble but also people trapped in the mountains of the Massif de la Hotte following landslides.

At the national level, 154 rescuers including 27 women, 3 groups of firefighters from the North department; firefighters from the Haitian National Police, from Jacmel, volunteer firefighters from Carrefour and Gressier, but also brigadiers from the Civil Protection of the South, Nippes, were mobilized for several days and until 'to three weeks for some.

They were joined by international rescue groups, including an urban search and rescue team from Fairfax County (Virginia, USA); specialized firefighters from Colombia; rescuers from France, search and rescue experts from Brazil; lifeguards from the United Kingdom, Chile, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Thanks to them, but also to members of the population, dozens of people came out alive from the rubble.

In addition, the Technical Department of the COUN informed all those involved in the production of the progress report of the actions carried out as the first immediate response to the disaster caused by the earthquake. damage. "We will publish the final report of this work based on the data collected, processed and analyzed with the support of OCHA," said COUN technical director Jerry Chandler.

This step is being taken as in-depth sectoral assessments are gradually being carried out with the support of partners, including OCHA, and the recovery phase will be initiated under the direction of the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation.
