During the Council of Ministers held on Thursday September 2, 2021, it was decided to postpone the start of the school year initially scheduled for Monday September 6.

The start of the new school year following this decision will take place on September 21, 2021 for the 7 departments not directly affected by the earthquake of August 14 and on October 4 for the Grand South (South, Nippes and Grand'Anse)

"All the students in the South must be able to go to school [...] For schools to open, we have a lot of work. We must remove the rubble and put structures to accommodate the children," explained Prime Minister Ariel Henry

"The back-to-school period is still very difficult in the country," added Ariel Henry, referring to the "socio-political and economic environment [...] We want to make arrangements to pay allowances to parents of pupils and teachers. All this takes time and that is why we have postponed the school in the southern peninsula and in the rest of the country."
