Haiti - Social : Humanitarian dimension of the Operation «Phoenix»

Alongside the security operations of the Operation Phoenix, the peacekeepers perform several local initiatives "civil-military" for the benefit of the population, said Major General Luiz Ramos.

These local initiatives which mainly concern the neighborhoods of Cite Soleil, Bel-Air and Martissant, are "designed to ensure a long-term presence in these neighborhoods to strengthen confidence between the residents, the PNH and the Minustah." Started July 15 these three days of activities for the benefit of the people will lead to operations of removal of debris in the streets, the installation of dental and medical clinics as well as engineering construction and repair of roads in the neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince.

Thus on the morning of July 15, at the collège Sainte Thérèse Davila of the commune of Cité Soleil, 500 kits of food were distributed to residents. 1.000 others should be in the next two days. In one of the rooms of the college, dozens of children, having received school kits each containing a bag, notebooks and other supplies, attend the screening of a film in Creole, specially produced for them.

In another room, the doctors of military contingents, receive patients. Sometimes it's sick children which are accompanied by parents. The health workers is composed of five physicians: one Brazilian, one Filipino, two Bolivians and Peruvians. After being auscultated and diagnosed, patients receive the drugs needed to treat pathologies simple of "level 1".
