Civil society entities oppose the referendum

44 days before the referendum on the new constitution (June 27, 2021), around fifteen Civil Society organizations in a common position made public this week, reject the entire referendum process that should lead to a change in the Constitution, arguing that this unconstitutional move will only plunge the country into a new crisis. Recall that this new Constitution, if approved, will be the 27th that Haiti has known since its independence.

74 former deputies for a Government of National Union

In a joint note, the 74 former deputies of the Group of Former Parliamentarians for the Balance and Stability of the Country (GAPESP) ask the executive to continue to seek a peaceful solution to the crisis, specifying "[...] This solution must inevitably pass through an inclusive agreement which will lead to a Government of national unity with all the living forces of the nation, a political agreement including a balanced Provisional Electoral Council, the holding of legislative elections and the referendum within a reasonable time [...]"

FAO concerned about Haiti

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) expresses concern over worsening food insecurity in four Central American countries and Haiti according to global report on harvest prospects and food situation. El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Haiti are food insecure. In Haiti, an estimated 4.1 million people are severely food insecure, in crisis or in emergency. The reduction in agricultural production, high food costs, loss of income caused by the pandemic and socio-political unrest, among others, explain the high levels of Food Insecurity in Haiti.

Increase agricultural productivity

The Ambassador of Taiwan (Republic of China) in Haiti, Ku Wen-jiann welcomed Jacky Lumarque, Rector of Quisqueya University (UniQ) to the site of the Taiwanese Technical Mission in Pont-Sondé. The two men discussed how to combine research with practice in order to increase agricultural productivity.
