Haiti - Justice : National moot competition, call for candidates

The Human Rights Office in Haiti (BDHH) is informing the general public and law students in particular of the launch of the 6th edition 2021 of the Human Rights Moot Competition.

Since 2015, the Competition has provided a platform for future lawyers to practice public speaking. At the very foundation of justice and democracy, the Competition honors the principle of the adversarial, and thus allows to tackle major societal issues in all their complexity. Far from soft consensualism, the Competition is thus an opportunity to actively engage in debates for the defense of human rights and the strengthening of the rule of law.

Over the years, the BDHH legal team has hosted dozens of interns who have actively contributed to legal aid services delivered to the most vulnerable. The Competition is thus an integral part of the program for the supervision of the next generation of legal professionals and contributes to the training of a network of professionals aware of human rights.

The Competition is open to law students who have completed at least three years of study or who have graduated within less than one year. The Competition is national in scope; students enrolled in provincial universities are strongly encouraged to participate.

The theme of the written preselection this year is "The place of the victim in the criminal process". It echoes the concerns of the BDHH legal team faced with countless difficulties in providing legal support to victims, from recent massacres committed in poor neighborhoods to too many cases of gender-based violence. What can or should we seek through justice ? What role for the "civil party" ?
