Haiti - Insecurity : The OAS urges the Haitian authorities

In a statement from the OAS General Secretariat on insecurity in Haiti, the Secretariat said it is monitoring the situation in Haiti very closely and deplores the deterioration of the security climate and more particularly the upsurge in kidnappings and assassinations.

"The right to physical integrity, an echo of respect for human life, being a fundamental principle of human rights that must be preserved" recalls the Secretariat, which asks the Haitian authorities to take the necessary measures to guarantee the right to life and to dignity for all of its citizens.

In addition, the OAS General Secretariat urges the authorities concerned to deploy all the necessary efforts to protect the population and allow it to evolve in a peaceful environment where fear and violence do not prevail. It also invites them to conduct investigations to shed light on the massacres perpetrated in several poor neighborhoods and bring the perpetrators of these despicable crimes to justice.
