Haiti - Politic : Thousands of Haitians demonstrate against the referendum project

On Sunday, at the call of the Protestant sector and civil society organizations, several thousand people marched in the streets of Port-au-Prince to denounce, among other things, the Referendum that had to decide whether or not to replace the 1987 Constitution with a new Constitution.

The mostly young demonstrators, joined by activists and sympathizers of the radical opposition and several opposition leaders including Jean Charles Moïse, launched slogans against the referendum, for respect for the current Constitution, against President Moïse and the dictatorship and against the support of the Americans and the international community for the current government...

The protest went off without major incident. Posters on the referendum were torn from the paths of protesters. However, a few clashes between "protesters" and law enforcement were recorded and several barricades of flaming tires were erected on the course.

For its part, the National Police of Haiti (PNH) recalled in a note that it had taken all the necessary measures to secure the demonstration on Sunday, specifying "[...] nevertheless, attempts of violent action on the part of demonstrators are to be deplored.

Small groups, gathered on both sides in the area of the Champs Mars, threw stones in the direction of the base of the Departmental Unit of Maintenance of Order (UDMO) which is located in the same perimeter" stressing "The police maintained, in spite of the attacks, a professional behavior" reminding to the initiators of demonstrations "[...] that they are called to be responsible for the consequences of violent acts which would result from it."
