Haiti - Humanitarian : 14 million euros in EU aid for the most vulnerable populations

The European Commission has announced humanitarian aid of 17 million euros to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in Haiti and the Caribbean, which have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič said : "The EU continues to provide life-saving humanitarian aid support directly to the most vulnerable population. In Haiti as well as in the rest of the Caribbean, recurrent natural hazards further increase vulnerabilities, while also exacerbated by the coronavirus. In this challenging time, the EU is stepping up its long-standing humanitarian assistance to those most in need."

In Haiti, an amount of 14 million euros will save the lives of people suffering from extreme food insecurity, provide protection to migrants and victims of gang violence and increase resilience to disasters.

Let's recall that with 448 million euros allocated since 1994, Haiti is the main beneficiary of EU humanitarian aid in Latin America and the Caribbean. The coronavirus pandemic increases the vulnerability of the Haitian population and causes a sharp increase in the price of food and agricultural products, which leads to a further erosion of the purchasing power already undermined and, in turn, a worsening of the 'insecurity.
