Haiti - DR : More than 2,500 Haitians intercepted while trying to cross the Dominican border clandestinely

The past week in La Vigía, municipality of Dajabón, more than a hundred Haitians (men, women and children) who tried to enter the Dominican territory illegally at night, were spotted by night vision drones and intercepted by a mobile patrol (motorcycle and all-terrain buggy) of members of the Specialized Land Border Security Corps (CESFRONT).

While most Haitians were on foot, others were carried on motorcycles by Dominicans involved in human trafficking across the border.

The Haitians were handed over to the migration services to be registered and returned to Haiti.

Statistics indicate that since the start of the year, more than 2,500 Haitians have been arrested by Cesfront for illegally crossing the border and have been returned to Haiti.

Brigadier General José Manuel Duran Ynfante, Director General of CESFRONT, assured that on instructions from the Dominican high command, these operations will be reinforced and intensified in order to fight against the passage of illegals and traffickers.

For its part, the Directorate General of Migration (DGM) revealed that during the year 2020, more than 20,000 Haitians were arrested throughout the Dominican territory in an irregular migratory situation and were expelled to Haiti. It is noted that during the border closure from March to July, in order to stop the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, deportations were suspended and illegal Haitian nationals were kept in detention for humanitarian reasons.

In addition, migration statistics reveal that during the year 2020 nearly 217,000 Haitians returned voluntarily to Haiti.
